Scanner Comparision: V600 vs V330

Post by Mr.V600 »

Comparing the picture quality of these two scanners, I see very little difference. I used an IT8 calibration chart to calibrate them.

Without calibration, they might look different out of the box, but when calibrated, they are extremely close in picture quality. If you load the following images into a photo program and flip back and forth between them, you can see the V600 has better contrast capability and gets more detail out of the image. But it is very slight. For the price difference between a used V330 and a new or used V600, it would not prohibit me from choosing the V330 if cost is a strong factor in your purchase options. The ICC profile can be found here

With IT8 calibration on Vuescan, it's recommended to use "Neutral" for the Color Balance. I did slightly increase the "Curve Low" for the V330 on Vuescan to make it very close overall output of the V600. V600 = 0.25 (default) / V330 = 0.27.

One area the V600 really shines is scanning a reflective CD. Of the 3 scanners I have, the V600 is 1st place by a long shot. Though I prefer the A320 for booklets and liner notes, I still use the V600 for CD scans if there is a lot of reflective area. As seen in the image down below, the V330 is nearly unusable in it's native capability. But with some physical filtering medium, it cleans up a lot.

Scanning Times:

The V600 is quite a bit faster then the V330 at higher DPI. Though the V600 has a longer "calibration" period before each scan, the actual scanning speed is faster. At 600DPI the V330 is faster due to a much faster self calibration routine, but for 800 and 1200 DPI, it's significantly longer scan times.

All images are at 800DPI and presented in native scale (download to view in full size). Two CD booklets were scanned at the same time. One with real images and one with animation images to show the difference, if any. The final image of the discs is not to scale, but rather to show the picture quality difference between the Epson V600, Epson V330 and OpticPro A320E.

V330 disc scanning with filtering medium placed infront of it. Something to tamper down the stray light goes a long way in controlling the picture quality.
